Neutral effective balance design

EIP-8068은 이더리움 검증자의 유효 잔액(effective balance) 설계를 보다 중립적으로 조정하는 코어 Draft 제안입니다. 현재 설계의 32 ETH 경계 효과를 완화하여 검증자 잔액 관리를 더 효율적으로 만들려 합니다.

Effective Balance Background

Ethereum validators have an "effective balance" that is used for reward and penalty calculations, capped at a maximum and updated in discrete increments. The effective balance lags behind the actual balance and is updated according to specific rules. EIP-7251 increased the maximum effective balance to 2048 ETH, but introduced new design considerations for the balance update mechanism.

Neutral Design Goals

EIP-8068 proposes adjustments to the effective balance update rules to make them more neutral with respect to validator balance levels. The goal is to prevent unintended incentives that cause validators to target specific balance thresholds. A neutral design ensures that the effective balance closely tracks the actual balance without creating cliff effects.

Impact on Validator Economics

The current effective balance design can create situations where small balance differences lead to disproportionate changes in effective balance and thus rewards. By smoothing the update mechanism, EIP-8068 aims to make validator economics more predictable and reduce gaming of the system. This benefits both small and large validators.

Draft Status

As a Draft, EIP-8068 is working through the technical details of the new balance update formula and its interaction with EIP-7251 (increased max effective balance). Simulation of validator reward outcomes under different scenarios is needed. Community consensus on the correct design tradeoffs is still being developed.
