Motivation
Ethereum hard forks are identified by codenames (such as Shanghai, Cancun, Prague), but there is no formal process for associating visual mascots or imagery with these upgrades. EIP-8066 proposes formalizing a community-driven process for selecting and ratifying official mascots for each Ethereum upgrade. This would help with public communication and educational outreach.
Mascot Selection Process
The proposal envisions a community voting or nomination process for selecting mascots, potentially coordinated through the EIP process or Ethereum governance forums. Once selected, the mascot would be formally recorded in the EIP for the corresponding upgrade. The mascot would be freely usable for educational and promotional purposes.
Informational Nature
As an Informational EIP, EIP-8066 does not propose any protocol changes. It is a meta-level proposal about how the Ethereum community communicates about upgrades. Its Draft status reflects that the community has not yet reached consensus on whether or how to formalize mascots.
Historical Context
Ethereum upgrades have informally been associated with imagery in the community — for example, the Merge was associated with panda imagery in some communications. EIP-8066 seeks to make this association more formal and consistent. The proposal draws inspiration from other open-source communities that use mascots to build identity and engagement.
