Inclusion Lists Background
Inclusion lists are a mechanism proposed to reduce proposer power over transaction censorship, by requiring that certain transactions be included in blocks. EIP-8046 builds on this concept by introducing a uniform price auction to determine which transactions make it onto the inclusion list. This creates a market-based approach to inclusion priority.
Uniform Price Auction Design
In a uniform price auction, all winning bidders pay the same clearing price rather than their individual bids. Applying this to inclusion lists means that transactions competing for list spots pay a single market-clearing fee. This prevents price discrimination and makes the system more transparent and predictable for users.
Censorship Resistance Goals
By making inclusion a market process with transparent pricing, EIP-8046 aims to reduce the ability of block proposers to selectively exclude transactions. Transactions that pay the clearing price have a guaranteed path to inclusion regardless of content. This strengthens Ethereum's censorship resistance properties.
Draft Status
EIP-8046 is in Draft status and requires detailed simulation and game-theoretic analysis. The auction mechanism must be resistant to manipulation and collusion between bidders and proposers. Integration with PBS (proposer-builder separation) and other MEV-related infrastructure is an open design question.
