Motivation
The Ethereum state trie grows every time a new account or storage slot is created, imposing a permanent storage cost on all full nodes. EIP-8037 proposes raising gas costs for these state-creation operations to better reflect the long-term burden they impose. The goal is to economically discourage unnecessary state bloat.
Proposed Changes
Specific opcodes and precompile calls that result in state creation — such as account creation via CALL or storage slot initialization via SSTORE — would have their base gas costs increased. The exact multipliers are subject to ongoing research and simulation. This is a breaking change that requires a hard fork.
State Growth Problem
Ethereum's state has grown significantly since genesis, making it harder for new nodes to sync and for all nodes to maintain performant access. Increasing creation costs is one lever among several being explored, alongside state expiry and stateless Ethereum research. EIP-8037 focuses specifically on the economic disincentive approach.
Draft Status and Open Questions
As a Draft, EIP-8037 is still being refined. Open questions include the appropriate magnitude of the cost increase, interaction with EIP-4762 access list changes, and potential impact on smart contract deployment costs. Community feedback and empirical modeling are needed before it can progress.
