Proposal
Delayed execution would allow a transaction to be included in a block for scheduling purposes but only executed in a subsequent block. This separates transaction ordering from execution, potentially improving MEV resistance.
Motivation
By decoupling inclusion and execution, validators lose the ability to front-run transactions at the time of execution. The scheme was also motivated by research into parallel transaction processing pipelines.
Why It Stalled
The proposal introduces significant protocol complexity around state access, refund handling, and cross-transaction dependencies. Consensus on a concrete design proved difficult, leading to the Stagnant classification.
Historical Context
Delayed execution ideas have circulated in Ethereum research since at least 2019. EIP-7886 was a formalization attempt, but the community has not yet reached agreement on whether the benefits justify the overhead.
