Motivation
Gas prices for certain EVM opcodes have not been updated to reflect modern hardware benchmarks. Some compute-heavy operations can be executed far more cheaply than their actual CPU cost justifies.
Affected Opcodes
The proposal targets arithmetic and bitwise opcodes where the current gas cost underestimates measured execution time. Specific opcodes and their proposed new costs are enumerated in the EIP specification.
Security Rationale
Underpriced compute opcodes can be used to construct blocks that take abnormally long to execute, degrading node performance. Repricing aligns incentives and protects network health.
Status
EIP-7904 is in Draft and is part of a broader series of gas repricing efforts. It will likely be bundled with other repricing EIPs in a future hardfork.
